2013 White House Christmas Decorations

I love the White House decorations.  Each year I look forward to the First Lady unveiling the massive trees and display. The theme this year was Gather Around.  The theme focuses on holiday traditions and each tree will tell a story.  There are a total of 24 trees on display to the public, and than the Obama’s tree in their private residence totaling 25.  With the exception of the Obama’s personal tree, which will be decorated by Sasha and Malia, 83 volunteers from across the country participated in tree trimming, wreath hanging and other displays.  I think the trees and decorations are amazing.

Jackie Kennedy was the First Lady to introduce a theme for the Christmas trees in the White House.  The tradition was carried on by those who followed her. In 1973, the Nixon’s solicited volunteers to help decorate the White house for the holiday season.

That tradition continues as well.  The volunteers are usually florists who own their own business and garden club members.  They apply at least a year in advance for the positions.

Visitors will be able to help themselves to cookies prepared by White House pastry chef, Bill Yosses, and his assistants.  The White House dogs, Bo and his sister Sunny are featured.  The pastry chef and his assistants will bake 25,000 cookies for this years festivities.  In addition to 25,000 cookies, a 300 pound replica of the White House is on display.  I would say the chefs have been busy.

Thanks to the chefs and volunteers who worked diligently to make the People’s House a winter wonderland for all to enjoy.  I know I do.
